Squirrel Mama

Okay, BAD picture of me... but here is one of my little squirrel babies... Thomas and I were sitting at home when we had a knock on the door... A tenant of ours said "Um, Thomas, we have a squirrel problem out here... they keep following us around and won't leave us alone". So, Thomas and I go outside and these cute little squirrel babies were running around in the grass. When I stepped out in the lawn, one of the little critters turned and ran straight for me. The little guy scampered up my leg... It was adorable and totally frightening.

So, we had to catch the three little babies and put them in a cat carrier, so that they would stop following the neighbors around. We put them in our office, with a little bowl of water (against my judgement cuz I thought they'd spill it)... When we checked on them that night, they had spilled the water and were like three little drown rats... completely soaked and huddled in a ball. It was so sad, and we were worried that we had killed them... So we hurried them over to our apartment and put the cat carrier in our bathtub.

I put on leather gloves and long sleeves and took the little ones out one at a time and hand dried them with towels. Then I dried out their cage and put fluffy towels in for them to snuggle up in. Luckily, in the morning they had fluffed back up and were looking healthy :o)

My friend Steph found me a lady who rescues orphaned wildlife and takes care of them, and releases them... So I took the babies to this lady, who told me that they were too young to have been released into the wild because they should have been still nursing off of their mother. (A few days before the babies were found, there was a dead adult squirrel near the lawn...)

Thankfully the lady said that the babies were healthy, though a little dehydrated, but had no parasites or visible diseases... :o) which is good, cuz I was so worried about getting sick, or having our kitty Bella get some parasite... So I got to be a Squirrel Mama for a day. Squirrel babies are better than no babies at all... hehehe :o)

Here is the baby scaling the Allison mountain...

So tiny!
